An ottoman is usually a very original piece of furniture that can give the room the missing zest by decorating the living room or bedroom. Each hostess or owner, if desired, can independently make an ottoman from improvised materials. Let's take a look at how this can be done.
Materials Needed
Depending on what your ottoman will be made of, you may need:
- For the bottle ottoman:
- bottles - their number depends on the size of the pouf;
- fabric (preferably dense, which is used for upholstery of furniture);
- cardboard - to create the top and bottom;
- adhesive tape;
- Foam.
- For a board ottoman:
- chipboard or boards;
- wooden beam - size 4 * 8 * 8 cm;
- upholstery fabric;
- Foam;
- Screws;
- wheels for furniture;
- metal corners;
- PVA glue.
Creating a base from bottles
This process is quite simple. Based on the planned size of the pouf, determine and prepare the required number of bottles. All of them should have the same height and shape, be clean and dry, with tightly screwed lids.
All the bottles need to be joined together with tape to get the shape of the ottoman, such as cylindrical or rectangular. At the bottom and top, it is worth attaching sheets of thick cardboard. Do not spare the tape. The more layers of tape you fix the bottles in the structure, the stronger the final product will be.
Wood base
Cut out the parts of the required size for each of the sides of the pouf from chipboard. The top can be square, round and any other. The middle part will be square or rectangular in shape. The lower part of the ottoman can be left open. After that, the resulting parts must be connected together using self-tapping screws and angles. At the same time, it is important to make sure that all the corners are even.
After carefully lubricating all the joints with glue, and waiting for it to dry, you can attach the bars to the bottom of the ottoman, in each of the 4 inner corners. Use several self-tapping screws for more reliable fastening. Attach wheels to these bars from below.
Upholstery of the ottoman
After the body is ready, you can start upholstery. In order for the ottoman to turn out soft (especially for a wooden pouf), it is better to use several layers of foam rubber. To make a newly-made piece of furniture look neat, cut out parts from foam rubber for the top, bottom (one layer will be enough here) and sides. Be sure to make allowances of two centimeters on each side of the cut pieces of material. Sew all the parts by applying them to the pouf.
Cut out the same pieces from the fabric, but with a larger allowance (it is determined taking into account the thickness of the foam) and sew the ottoman. It is desirable that the seams are inside. If this is not possible, then they can be hidden under a beautiful edging. In order for the ottoman to look original, you can sew a fringe on the bottom or come up with another type of decoration.
The ottoman is ready. Now your room has acquired an updated look, and you can consider yourself a real master (or craftswoman).
