- Osteoporosis should be of particular concern to women who have gone through menopause. At the end of the reproductive period, changes occur in the hormonal system of women, not only concerning sex hormones, but also many others that regulate metabolism. Problems arise in the genitourinary and cardiovascular systems.
For women, this is a serious problem, but it is insignificant compared to the highest risk of cardiovascular and oncological diseases that accompany menopause and beyond. A way out of this situation was sought in hormone replacement therapy – it does reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, but dramatically increases the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer. Trying to find an alternative to hormone replacement therapy, fighting cardiovascular diseases, doctors faced the fact that hormonal disorders create other problems, in particular, the problem of osteoporosis.
- It is pointless to fight this disease by trying to relieve its symptoms. That is, you can, of course, take more calcium - but you need to do it carefully. Osteoporosis is not a problem of lack of calcium in the body, but a problem of a lack of calcium in the bones, because it does not stay there, it is washed away. To stop this process, it is necessary to affect the hormonal system – so far we cannot offer such an effective effect. But we don't offer symptomatic treatment – we don't recommend just taking more calcium, because at this age its absorption depends on vitamins K and D.
It is better to take a glass of milk a day, eat fresh cottage cheese, fish - this is quite enough. Another way is to take medications that will prevent calcium from being washed out of the bones. It is a balanced combination of vitamins K and D, which contribute to the normal metabolism of calcium in the bones.
